Glade
The goal
Glade is a brand people already keep in their homes, and SC Johnson wanted into connected home care. The product: an air freshener you control from an app, with intensity, schedules and a night light you can set to any color. The job was to make it feel like Glade, not like a gadget.
The challenge
Smart home products fail when they ask too much. Most people do not want to manage a device, they want it to work. Every feature had to earn its place against one question: is this easier than the can you already own.
My role
I designed the IoT application and owned the relationship with the brand, so the roadmap stayed tied to what the client needed to ship.
How I approached it
Start from the shelf, not the app. The buyer is a regular Glade customer, so the app had to feel obvious in the first minute: pair the device, set the scent and schedule, pick a light color, done. The extras stay out of the way, and refills are one tap, because the business only works if the product keeps getting used.
A connected product has to feel like less work than the thing it replaces.
The result
The app shipped to a closed beta trial: SC Johnson's first step into connected home care. Control of scent, schedule and light in one place, built to feel as easy as the product people already trust.
